Allergic to fake food...

December 4th, 2007 at 05:19 pm

So we have been trying to nail down the trigger for hives in UE. We think fake food is the culprit. We had been eating some pre-made breaded chicken patties..easy to make when the rest of the house is sick. Plus a few other convenience foods that all prolly have food coloring in them. And we already have a very good idea that he gets hives from bright red food coloring (like in colored goldfish, or red punch).

So we stopped eating convenience food...until we went to GA. There he had some American cheese, and the Japanese steak house food. Next morning new hives... so we really think it is fake food...I hope it wasn't the soy sauce, we like fried rice and the like. American cheese on the other hand we don't really like anyway.

I feel like a silly overprotective mother when I tell teachers and friends no food coloring but I worry that one day instead of just hives it will be something bigger...

Among my siblings and myself there were quite a few food allergies. My parents say that back in the 1960's they often were scoffed at when they needed to tell other adults about our eating restrictions. Mom says people acted like she was crazy, and just didn't believe her. They often did not even know the word "allergy" unless it was in reference to hayfever. Our allergies were not even anything exotic, but some of the most common food allergies --which most people these days know about. We also had among us a couple of food sensitivities, that are not true allergic reactions, but none the less a problem.

Back in those days there were not nearly so many food additives, and my parents rarely bought pre-made stuff anyway. I think kids now have a greater chance of coming upon something that will give them problems because there are just so many things out there and food has become so manipulated. So I think the friends & teachers will understand there could be a problem, but might not understand enough to scrupulously watch for it on behalf of your child. You will have to teach your child to be vigilant.

Are you certain that it's hives? I've fallen behind in blogs so apologies if you've addressed this already. I thought I had hives so I didn't go to the Doctor since there's not much they can do for hives. I had an itchy rash that came and went and was worse with heat. Sounded like hives to me. After 6 weeks of misery, I finally went (was misdiagnosed once), but eventually saw another Dr. who determined my itchy rash (what I thought was hives) was atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. I started medication on Friday and feel SO MUCH BETTER already!

Eczema is less common in adults, but much more common in kids and teens.

    I don't think you're being over-protective at all. You're being a good mom.

Not over protective, it is a great idea to alert staff and it can be "much worse" at some point if you don't watch. I agree that as UE gets older he will need to be vigilant on his own. Get it in the Drs records as well.

Yes we are pretty sure it is hives, you can watch them pop up and then grow and then fade, within an hour he might have the hives traveling all over one hand and then the next, then a foot, or all 4 and then nothing.

We also have Eczema in the family, so we have lots of practice looking at that too! Though the first time I had it I was so worried it was something terrible. Happened to be when I was pregnant, which is the only time I get eczema...

Glad to know you don't think it is silly..so far GMC has gotten hives only from red things...like punch, and he is very good about not eating it, even in cookies! I hope UE will be as understanding soon.
