Smoking might cost you ebay sales

February 26th, 2008 at 08:56 pm

I just bought a book off ebay for my sons next math adventure...it smelled like smoke so bad I immediately stuck it out in the garage. Two weeks later I still cannot walk past it without gagging.

Now I was stupid to buy a book without checking, I wont be making that mistake twice. The next book has to come from a smoke free home, or I am not buying it.

I have bought a few books from ebay and half.com and was surprised that a book could absorb so much smoke. I never even gave it much thought, but the first time you open the book, watch out!

Indeed. That triggered my husband's asthma. But I set them aside and eventually they did air out sufficiently. Another problem with books from a smoking home is that the smoke degrades the paper. They fall apart sooner. I know this from lending books to smokers for months to years and getting them back all yellow and brittle, like some ancient thing. It is definitely a positive if the seller can assure they are from a nonsmoking home.

So true. I wish all sellers would specify if they smoke or not in their listings, especially on items that aren't really cleanable, like books.

I agree, it should be an automatic thing to check off when you are listing. I ordered clothes and forgot to check, yuck! You might try putting it outside on a nice day and letting the wind flip the pages.

"it should be an automatic thing to check off when you are listing."

That's actually a really good idea. I think I will e-mail that to ebay as a suggestion. It would be simple for them to implement.

Maybe if we all suggest it, they'll do it.

probably should add pet free to for those who are allergic, doesnt matter to me I have dogs and cats but my grandson has allergies so would care if I were sending it that way.

I have a listing template that I use for my auction listings. I'm going to add "smoke-free, pet-free home" to that template.
