ebay to run a pack

March 13th, 2008 at 04:02 pm

I am wondering..can I buy used badges on ebay to give out? I would (will) use used ones for my kid (hand me downs from brother in law) but I am not sure other parents would be willing to use them.

I am going to try and scrounge up leader books on ebay...I see no reason we can't reuse them if I can find them..and we certainly cannot afford new ones.

Of course making sure they are the proper year format is important (to others, my kid can suffer!) and washing any cloth (shirts neckerchiefs) would be important, but I wonder if we could use the pins and such used?

Betcha BSA wouldn't approve! but BSA isn't the one with $50 worth of badges to buy and $16 in the bank!

Or at least ask the parents to chip in - my DD2 was in GSA and we had to buy the badges. I always went to the store myself to avoid any kickbacks the troop were keeping (we had some issues with money - I was the treasurer and we had scads of $ in the account but STILL had to pay for things OOP)

See what EBAY has as well as Craigslist. As the money person I wouldn't worry about it as long as you have a detailed account of where the money went. Good luck!

My GS troop does not keep ANY percent over and above costs of things like badges. We start the year with a modest dues (like $20) as well as about $100 from the previous year. We do a small Fall Nut sales and a BIG spring cookie sale. We have PLENTY of money to use for actvities for the year, such as paying for ice skating, zoo trip, end of the year party (I want to rent a portable climbing wall, about $100)

Go for it if you want to obtain used badges, no big deal, but of course BSA won't like it.

Princess Perky's Rebel Cub Scouts! Ask on Freecycle, too. If I saw a request for old CS items, I'd certainly see if I had anything sitting in drawers to donate. Back when I was a kid in the 1960's there used to be a uniform resale event for BS and GS combined. It was common to reuse-recycle. Smile Some people even wore "out of date" uniforms and nobody thought anything negative about it. I would actually think re-using CS items would fit nicely in with CS values and goals.

Having stopped doing GS this past year, I donated my book (leader) & my daughter's outfits, unsewn on badges, etc. to the local troop so that they would give them to someone that needed the stuff. You could also ask the older scouts what they are doing with their old stuff?
