figured out paypal

July 21st, 2008 at 06:48 pm

I finally learned how to get to my paypal account. so I finally made a kiva loan...

I found it very hard to decide who to loan to.. so I picked one that was about funded, had a short repayment term, and had a 5 star rated partner.

I will let you know how it went in 4-6 months.

I also bought stuff.. so that paypal money is about gone.

Kiva is so great. All my loans have been repaid and I just keep recycling the money to more folks. I wish they could keep up with the demand!

Hmmm... I will have to check out Kiva. Don't know anything about it! Sounds interesting.

Can you tell me a little about your experience with KIVA? Do I understand correctly that a person "lends" a small amount and then after six months or so receives that amount back?

They are micro loans and the applicants have been screened by folks in the applicant's country. They have a very low default rate and seem to offer all the opportunities that are so praised by people who wish to empower small businesses. It's been a good learning experience too for my daughter and an opportunity to talk about different areas in the world and how credit and money work.

After the loan is completely repaid, you can take your money out, but I prefer to keep the money in there and lend it to a new borrower. The duration of the loans vary. The website is kiva.org and it explains the process very well. I know there are other similar sites out there.

Interesting. Do you get any interest paid back on your loan or is this strictly altruistic? Pretty amazing how much of a difference a little money (by our standards) can make!

    No interest--just satisfaction.
I've been very happy with it--
It's a valuable life lesson for me as well as my daughter.
