unsending an email

December 4th, 2008 at 07:05 pm

Boy do I wish there was a way.

I failed to cut and paste into a new email, and forwarded a long back and forth, with the 'show quoted text' I often forget how long emails can be. I have no idea what sort of history is in the former messages, and no way of knowing if the folks I sent it to will read it or not.

I could go look at what is in it of course, but I am not sure if it is better to pray they don't read below the signature unknowing, or start finding out just how much trouble I could be in.

The worst part is letting others have my friends email address.

I feel terrible and I don't know how to fix it.

Why can't there be a unsend button? like the timer on the edit buttons here? since the email sits in servers for a time anyway, why not an hour delay or something?

I suppose asking my email to be idiot proof is a bit much.

I love the concept of an "unsend button." I sure could have used this a time or two, especially when I worked.

Years ago a colleague gave me some good advice: "Never include anything in an email that could come back to haunt you."

Emails can be archived, forwarded, and even deleted emails can be retrieved... they never really disappear. I've learned to choose my words carefully and sometimes I'll compose a message offline or as a draft, think about it, then send the email later. Sometimes, I end up not sending it after all because I cool off or get more information that changes things.

Totally understand here! What I do when I send an email to multiple people, I insert everyone's email addy in the Blind copy field so others can not see other's email address.

My work email (outlook) has a recall message option. But there is only about 50/50 chance it will work because it is kinda left up to the receiver to not open the first sent message before they open the second email that takes away the incorrect one.

It will probably be fine though. I usually don't pay much attention to all the other email addressses and stuff on Forwards when I get them.
I read somewhere that if you are writing a letter when you are upset or angry you should always put the letter into your Draft folder first. Then wait till later on and re-read your letter. If it still sounds good then send it.

I read the other text and fortunately it seems nothing harmful. IT wasn't an angry letter, just me being too lazy to start a new email when I passed along info.
