Well that will kill the EF..sortof

December 11th, 2007 at 08:05 pm

I have a tooth that has been bothering me on and off for about two months, mostly I can deaden the nerves with mouthwash and some creative distraction, but last night nothing worked, I was up all night..well until 4am, then I managed a bit of sleep till 8.

So today I called the dentist and got a quote for a root canal..yeah I know self proscribing, but I have been thru this pain before. Only last time I went for a good many more sleepless nights before I called the Dentist. For one root canal the cost is around 800 dollars. plus the Xray and exam, plus a buildup and cap..or is it crown?

All told this little painful episode will cost us 2000 dollars...not really my favorite way to spend money at Christmas time.

But on the upside, it was there, sitting in the savings account...nice to have put it there for this sort of thing.

Is this after insurance payment or no insurance?

I recall amber had large dental bill too, and I've been wondering about the insurance aspect considered the decent insurance plans out there. For example, with Delta dental, the individual plan premium is around $100 a year and co-payment for a root canal is $400.

    No insurance.

Maybe you should look into getting insurance?

It's worth it since diagnostic, which I assume includes X-ray for oral evaluation, has no co-payment and the coverage for annual preventive care alone made up for most of the premium. Well, it depends on plans, but overall, it's quite affordable.

Does your job have flexible spending accounts? You have to pay money in but at least it is there for your emergency dental/medical copays. My dh is a school counslor so he doesn't have to pay in but we still get reimbursed. Maybe it is something to look into?

Bummer. I feel your pain. But at least you had an EF!

Sure, any decent dental insurance options? Let me know. Have never found anything that was more cost effective than self insurance.

So everyone, floss daily! Take care of those little pearls!

Oh wow, that really is painful, in more ways than one!

I've always wondered if a root canal is truly necessary, or, if the patient opts for it, the could just pull it out and call it a day.

Remember the tooth that I had pulled out last month? It was a molar that was root canaled about 10 years ago. When I met with my dentist, he said that all root canals will fail eventually, and even 5 years is actually pretty good. Afterwards, and even with constant maintenance with the filling, the tooth may still fall apart eventually.

My extraction took only 5 minutes for the dentist to do (not including time for the anesthesia to kick in), compared to the hour-long ordeal that was the root canal.

Extraction of a back molar is simpler and easier..but this is the first 'bicuspid' the last one on my smile...partly vanity means I want to keep it, and partly no desire for all my teeth to shift....

I honestly never researched the dental insurance..I assumed it was too expensive when independent (not available thru husbands work) which no he doesn't have a flex spend account.

And ditto Ferns comment! Flossing daily might have saved me this pain. Brushing alone is important, but not enough alone!

I had a root canal this year and am still paying for it and I have dental insurance. I asked him to just pull the thing and he said oh no it is good and will last you the rest of your life. Now that I read BA's comment I won't let him get away with it next time. He also wants to do about 2000.00 worth of work (that's the copay!) that I am refusing. I want to find a dentist like the one I had in PA that tells me the truth!

Our dentist is the same way. They are always insisting on work I don't think is needed at the time. He wanted to do oral surgery to remove my wisdom teeth and my part would have been 3000.00 after insurance. I told him they weren't bothering me and he said well they will eventually. I told him I want to wait until I can save up for it or they actually bother me and he pushed this finance plan on me. I told him no again. Then they tried to tell me I couldn't make any other appointments with them until I had it done. I paid for my cleaning that day and left. I called my insurance company and complained and then the dentist's office called me and asked to schedule my next cleaning, like none of this had taken place. I'm sure my insurance rep contacted them and they changed their attitude.

I wonder what on earth they want to do... It didn't cost 3000 to get two of my wisdom teeth out...

I agree root canals are not a total solution, but I am not ready for dentures yet!
