It sells, but it sucks

June 26th, 2008 at 04:18 pm

SO there is this graph showing how MTV plays no music anymore...and of course the comments are all on how it sucks.

And yet MTV wouldn't have switched from music to b;ab if they weren't making money.

So if the general consensus is that the blabbing sucks, why are we still watching it? (not that I have access to MTV, not sure who is watching it)

I think there are a lot of products other than TV, that gain popularity, but are not any good. Advertising is powerful stuff.

I think it's a two-sided. Back when I still lived at home and watched MTV & VH1, I liked some of the shows like the "True Life" series. BUT... I would have liked it if there was more music, too. The blab & shows must make more money, but maybe most people would just like to have BOTH (two separate channels maybe?). Hmmm, now I wish I had cable, lol.

Princess Perky, I am currently reading a book entitled "Taking Back Childhood" that discusses the ill affects of electronics and media on our children. You may want to pick it up, being such a proactive mommy as yourself. I am going to work this summer on getting my child away from the snares television and media frenzy (he's not as bad as others, but I think it could be much better). I watch my stepdaughters who watch nothing but MTV. They're like pigs to the slaughter.

I hardly turn on the tv anymore because of all the gossip type shows. I rent from netfix and don't have cable tv.

My sister is hooked to MTV and even she will admit 90% of it is utter garbage. I guess if you like 1 hour of rap videos and 23 hours of 'reality' shows then its a great channel. Wink

It's been awhile, but I seem to remember that both MTV and VH1 have a second station (i.e. MTV2 and VH1-2) which supposedly plays mainly music. Of course, the last time I had digital cable was nearly 4 years ago, so who knows what they have now.
