How do you make a hallway feel bigger

September 4th, 2008 at 05:15 pm

I think I read that mirrors work, but I don't know if I could find one.

The hallway is really small, the width of the front door frame and no more.

My goal is to paint it when I paint the living room hopefully this month.

BTW that free wallpaper job in the kitchen got done, looks AWESOME! I have such great friends.

I kinda would like to let the kids help with the paint in the living room, not the base coat, but I want some flowers, I think it would be fun to let the kids at JC's birthday party paint flowers on the one small wall.

I just have to figure out the base color, and I want something that wont make the hallway look any smaller than it already is.

I would definitely go with a lighter color - I would think darker would make it look even smaller. As for mirrors, why not try your local freecycle group to see if you can score any that way?

I tried hanging pictures in my hallway and decided that made it feel even smaller and closed in, so based on that experience, I would keep the long walls clear of any decorations or design.

It might also help to hang something at the end of the hall- that mirror, or a picture. Then as you enter the hallway, your eye is drawn to what's at the end, rather than to the sides and how narrow it is.

I agree with the lighter color paint, and if you don't mind using a bit more energy you might want to try higher wattage light bulbs and see if they help.

Is there any furniture in the hallway that could be replaced, freeing up floor space? For example, if you keep a table there to throw purse, keys etc. on, could it be replaced with a wall-mounted shelf?

The hallway is small but a mirror (to look in as you go out the door) might help. Light colors rock in that area. I like the flowers idea perhaps stencils would help make them a bit more uniform or flower looking.

There is no other end, one end is the front door, the other is the living room, just long enough to feel cramped. Though I might be able to put a VERY flat mirror on the back wall.

Nothing in it but foot mat, I wont even leave shoes there, cause it is so small. I considered finding out how hard it would be to put a recessed shelf/light/nook in it. Cause then it wouldn't take up space but would have a mirror at the back, and a light when company comes.

I think I will go with a light color, but I can't do my living room all yellow or something, maybe a tan.

Tan is nice and neutral, warm and pleasant for many colors of couch and brown curtains. A recessed nook would be cool but what about a "hole" in the wall that looks into the kitchen, perhaps 2 feet square? or even 18 inches. Would give the illusion o flarger cause you could see the kitchen when you come in the door.
