10 year olds with jobs

October 16th, 2008 at 04:44 pm

We are listening to an old Encyclopaedia Brown story.

Not only does encyclopedia have a booming detective business his friends have jobs. One is a lawn mower business.

Another story has the 10 year olds going camping, on their own.

This is shortly after reading the boxcar children. Where a 5 year old, 10 year old, a 12 year old and a 14 year old, make a home for themselves in a boxcar.

Were kids back in the day more capable, or just the ones in books?

hahaha!!...I never thought about that, but no, no ten year old today could run a lawn mower service.

I think several generations ago they could have. But for the majority, not in todays world.

I think a little of both.

I think parents baby their kids WAY too much these days. I'd say the same when I Was a child, but it's gotten to a level of ridiculousness.

The stories you mention may be a bit extreme.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Remember back in the "day" 10 was only 3 or 4 years form potentially being married. 17 was approaching old maid status. Kids that age often had the responsibility on a farm that would astound us now a days. I think kids are more than capable of doing those kinds of things if they don't rot their brains with video games or expect everything handed to them. Nowadays kids can't even have a paper route because the adults have them. It isn't safe to send a 12 year old down the street to look for lawn mowing or snow removal customers because of the sex offenders around. The kids suffer for it.

Kids are capable of a lot. Honestly, I think the fact that they spend 6 to 8 hours a day in school or being transported to and from school takes a lot of that capability away from them, and their desire to do things for themselves. They don't get to spend the time needed to learn necessary life skills like cooking and cleaning and maintaining a yard, a home, a farm or whatnot. They aren't in their parents corner store working the cash register after school or their family restaurant being a waitress or waiter, they're doing homework (because apparently six hours of "education" a day isn't enough). They get so tired out mentally from their education they don't have a chance to learn anything real. I'm not saying learning isn't important, it's just so much of what they learn is repetive and useless and could be done in three or four hours instead of six, leaving time for real life skills, like running their own little businesses so they could grow up to run bigger ones.

Of course, safety issues are big, too, now when they weren't so prevalent then.

Lucky Robin, that is one reason to we homeschool. Doubling, tripling or halfing a recipe is a great way to learn fractions, a lot of lifes lessons my kids learn here on the farm.

Several generations ago, (before the foster and social systems that are in place now), you had kids having their own businesses. They were the shoe shine boys, baggage runners at the bus and train depot, lawn mowers, window washers, ironing girls....Just watch some old Leave it to Beavers or read the Little House books for more!
