You paid what to watch ads?

December 5th, 2006 at 08:22 pm

Err..I may be cheap, but I find cableprices rediculous, sure I like some shows..junky or otherwise, I like mindless entertainment.

but 75$ a month to watch mostly ads?

Even the so called no ad shows are full of ads...for their own stuff! Ads for movies, ads for other shows, ads for music, and radio, not to mention ads for their 'brand' which of course they are capitalizing on by selling plenty of dolls, and such with the name, face, or whatnot on it.

And as opposed to the internet, there is no 'popup blocker' and no internal 'only look here' (dunno about you , but on my favorite sites I have to hunt for the ads, I just don't look at them)

Anyway, just posting my shock.

My DS has direct tv for about the same price as we have cable. They "tape" everything and skip all the commercials. It's funny how short a program is without the ads.

I love watching tv shows online now. ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX all have certain shows up online for viewing although some only offer the most recent episode. Generally there's about a 30 second ad where the usual commercial break would be but otherwise it's pretty painless. We pay only $13 for our 'cable' which is ultra basic and mainly only serves as an antenna although it does add a couple extra channels (Discover, Hallmark, WGN, E!, Lifetime, AMC). We don't need the extra channels although a couple of them we wouldn't mind. But the only reason we even pay for that little is because we have cable internet and if we have no cable tv at all they charge us an extra $10 so it's really only an extra $3 to have the channels come in crystal clear.

I agree the ads are ridiculous. I remember when cable was first being promoted as ad-free TV. Boy, did that change quickly!

13$ I can see, and taping shows I can see (though I am too cheap for tivo and the like)

    but 75..sorry don't get it.

I do remember when it was advertised as ad free......that was eons ago, and by the time we saw it, it was chock full of ads

Yup, as Ldyfaile pointed out, many shows are now available to watch online. Quite nice, though there's still little commercials.
for a while, Comcast was the only cable provider in my area, but I heard on the news recently that Verizon (???) or some other company was going to compete, which means that cable prices might start going down a bit. Still, it stinks that I have to pay $30 or so just for "basic" cable since my rabbit ears antenae can't pickup ABC, NBC, etc.
