No Christmas is not just about the kids...

December 22nd, 2006 at 05:27 pm

Warning this is a bit religious appologies to all who do not believe, no offense is intended, I merely want to rant.

Begin rant:

One of my first years with my husband my mother in law told me that Christmas was 'just for the kids'.

Sorry, I didn't feel that way then, and I don't feel that way now. Christmas is about the birth of Christ....God's gift to ALL people, He sent His son for all, the Grandpas, and Grandmas, the Aunts, and Uncles, the Mommas, and the Daddys, the Pastors and the Clerks, the bank tellers, the postal workers, the young the old, the in between, the rich, the poor, the struggling, the famous, the 'average', and yes even the terrorists. If you don't see yourself in that list you are trying to hard not to be, stop it.

Christmas is about God's gift to the world, and He didn't reserve his love for just the little children, I wont reserve my celebration of Jesus for just them either.

Yeah I know Christians borrowed the season from pagans, (and fertility worship isn't about kids either!) But borrow it we did, and we changed it, adapted it, combined it, an made it about Jesus. So now that we have it, lets keep it for ALL people, and celebrate the gift of eternal life...with gifts of our own, good food, and a bit of worship for good measure.

end rant Smile

to me, Christmas is about being blessed and feeling thankful for it! I, for one, agree with you: it's not about the children...just like it isn't about the material presents ...Have a merry Christmas!

Princess Perky: I sure that your husband and his mother meant well. Sometimes I say the same thing, not meaning to offend. A lot of us feel that the commercialization of the day loses its meaning because most of us feel like the majority of the gift giving is for the babes. After all that is how it started. When I was growing up, there wasn't any gift exchanging between brothers, sisters, etc. It was for the children. The adults exchanged gifts of pies, cakes, get togethers., etc. Each family bought for their own kids and if you knew of any kids that wouldn't have much, you helped out. But never, did we ever know who it was from.

Of course, the day is for everyone and it is up to our individual conscieness to remember those who will maybe be alone that day without any family or gifts. For the most part, we have allowed big business to dictate to us what our holiday should be about. I sometimes feel like the little kid who never had a Xmas or was disappointed come out at that time of the year. Good food, good friends, get-togethers are what those days are about.

We all have to keep in our heart what the day is about and teach it to our little ones.

Amen and Amen Christmas is meant to be a celebration of God's gift to us, Jesus, and what that means to everyone, whether they accept it or not. I applaud you and your DH.

On a note to those who only do things for the kids. My sister once told me that they weren't going to exchange gifts (her and her DH) not were they going to participate in the family grab bag. Her kids set her straight. One told her they didn't want to grow up if they weren't going to get presents anymore! The next year they exchanged gifts (cheap ones but the thought was there and the example)

I believe that we must allow our Creator to help us as we learn to respect our money and listen for the messages He gives us to help us. Let us keep open to Him and notice His love as He directs us.
Merry Christmas to all who believe in Christ and Happy Holidays to all who have their special views.

Christmas starts with Christ, hence the name. So many people still don't get that.
