I could never be pregnant in any other century

April 7th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

The further along I get (currently 31.5 weeks) the less I get done.

As I forced myself to stand long enough to fill the dishwasher (braxton-hicks contractions are only painless when compared to real labor) I realized I would be sunk if washing up consisted of more than 5 minutes of standing! Imagine having to wash dishes after every meal because there wouldn't be any to eat off at the next if you didn't!

I am spoiled, lazy (and tired) and very happy I am in this century not the last!

When I was pregnant with my daughter, we had THREE hurricanes hit that summer. During the first one, we just sat, in the hot hot HOT house, and I complained. Complained about being hot. Complained about being HUNGRY (seriously, I thought I was starving). My poor father ... he had my mom (who was menopausal (sp?), my brother (18 and obsessed with anything other than sitting in the dark hot house), a pregnant lady loosing her mind, and my sister who was six (and really just wanted to watch tv)

He did what any sane man would do and went out and bought a generator "just in case!"

Sure enough, we got hit like, three weeks later with another hurricane. This time, we were able to take turns with either running a fan/tv or the fridge. LOL. We would do it in cycles for an hour or so ... I remember saying to my mom "How did people do this before?!!?"

Sorry for the book ... but yes, seriously, I could never ever ever be pregnant without central air ever again. It was insane.

What I want to know is how to survive pregnancy without A/C. !!! (OF course I had 2 summer babies). I was just a swollen mess when I left my a/c cocoon. Which wasn't very often, believe me.

Heh, yes I am pregnant, sorry thought all knew it. Been this way for 31.5 weeks Smile
    Thanks for the congrats!

And yeah, central AC is very important for summer pregnancies! Though mine were all spring or fall, still. I have given standing orders that my husband is to wear a coat in the car..cause I WILL be putting the AC on!

LOL! I must be a medical anomaly....I was COLD my whole pregnancy! (and actually had to turn off the a/c at the office - my poor co-workers! ...this IS the tropics!)...
and Ale would cry if I turned on the a/c at the hospital...our internal thermostat must be broken!

LOL, wow! I had no idea there were no A/C nor dishwashers in the 20th century!!! ;-)

My friend says that most homes in the UK don't have AC. I guess they don't often need it.

Terri - I am from the Bay Area and A/Cs are not generally needed. Reminded me I had my baby shower there and almost died - it was like a 90-degree day and I Was miserable. Everyone marvels how we survive up in Sacramento in the horrid heat. I find it way more comfortable because we have A/C. (BEcause everyone has A/C). Not worth having it for the 5 days of the year it gets over 90 degrees, back home.

For much of the coastal northwest, A/C not needed...

I don't have it (A/C) in Northern California and my sister didn't have it in the Seattle area for many years, but finally had it installed a few summers ago, mainly because her SIL worked for a heating/air conditioning company and he actually put it in.

However, after my first car which didn't have air conditioning, I consider it a complete necessity! Cars get hot inside and stay hot it seems like. And then if we travel to places like Sacramento... ugh it's way to hot without it.
