Open mouth insult others...

September 17th, 2009 at 04:02 am

I posted a link on FB, and angered a friend.

I suppose the link is a bit strong when it speaks of compulsory schooling. I should have been more sensitive to the public school folk.

After all it would annoy me greatly to read any one of the many articles stating homeschoolers are idiots.

Only the truth can hurt your heart, lies are merely words. Sad thing is the truth of an opinion can hurt too.

And truthfully my thoughts on public school would hurt others, and I should keep them to myself, just as I offer no comment on a hair style I dislike.

Though posting a link isn't the same as saying my opinion, it is close enough.

does the friend already know you homeschool? i assume she would, and in that case don't really understand why she would get angry seeing as they are already aware...?

Very strange. I think it's one thing to be deliberate go out of the way to try to hurt someone. That shows a kind of malicious intent.

However, to simply voice your own opinion? And provide a link? I don't think that's worth getting upset over. There are plenty of things I agree and disagree about out there with friends and family, but none of it are personal, and I don't get upset over that....

Now I'm wanting that link. Wink I just think people should be FREE to learn as much, however, whenever, wherever, with whomever, and why ever they want. They should be free to choose public schools, though, ironically, I think kids give up a lot of freedom in a school as compared to learning based out of their own home.

Oh well, you can't please everyone on Facebook. I used to try and be pretty neutral, but once in awhile I would get a little riled up about a news story and post it, or post some humor at the expense of a party or politician. I only had one friend who would regularly get riled back and I would try to not get into online arguments with him, but when he started needling me for my veganism(?), I decided at this point we just weren't a good match anymore and I blocked him.

If you're continually posting things dissing public-school education in a really disrespectful way I could see someone getting upset, but one link? Maybe it's because I see both sides of this issue, but I feel like she might be overreacting.

Well it isn't the only political link I have posted, but being Gatto
Text is acceptance speech and Link is
acceptance speech it was the most openly shoking against public school.

The friend is more hurt (reading the article I can see where she might take it personally) than anything.

While I do agree with Gatto in most ways, I didn't really think much about how a chosen public schooler would feel reading it (about half my FB friends with kids are homeschoolers)

The strange thing is how open FB can be. While I am not ashamed of any of my links, thoughts, nor notes. I do think IRL I would not have gone to most of the FB folk and said 'hey check out this article'. But when I posted it I knew that several of my regular readers would be interested. It continued an IM conversation or two we had recently.

So I wasn't thinking of the FB community at large, I was thinking of my 'regular readers'.
